Steps to Backing Up Your Social Media History

Of course you know how important it is to back up such files as Word and PDF documents or pictures and videos you create. But what about your other files that aren’t so tangible, like those on your social media and other online accounts? If something happens, it’d be nice to know posts that are most important to you are still accessible.

But is it even possible to backup your social media accounts? The answer is yes. Most social media platforms don’t advertise it, but they have procedures you can follow to ensure you get copies of what you post.

With Twitter, you can archive your posts by first signing in from your desktop browser. Then go to the top of the page and click on your avatar. When a menu pops up, scroll down and select Settings and Privacy. Scroll down and click on Request Your Archive. Then an email will be sent to you that contains your entire Tweet history.

Facebook starts the same way. When logged in on your desktop, click Settings. Then at the bottom of the page, you’ll see and click on Download A Copy of Your Facebook Data. Facebook then makes an archive of all your posts, messages, and posts your friends shared with you. Once the archive is created, Facebook emails it to you.

LinkedIn also begins the same way. After logging in on your desktop, go to Settings and Privacy. At the bottom of the page, click on Account. Then click on Request an Archive of Your Data. As with Twitter and Facebook, LinkedIn will send you an email of your posting history.

You should expect to receive emails of your archived history from each of these platforms within 24 hours. It’s that simple.
