Food is an essential part of our lives. Many of us skip our breakfasts, grab our lunches as we rush out the door, and rely on fast food for dinner. Eating out of a can or grabbing the last soggy French fry from a bag may seem like a good idea when no other option exists. However, when we get into a habit of eating like this on a regular basis, our nutritional wellbeing and physical health inevitably suffer.
To maintain our health and nutrition, we must strike a balance in our diet and make sure that we get all of the essential nutrients our bodies need. A good first step, especially for those who may also want to monitor their weight, is to keep track of the foods and drinks we consume every day in a ‘food diary.’ Every cup of coffee, piece of candy, carrot stick, or slice of lunch meat should be listed. As best as possible, estimate the amount you consume in measurable terms (such as 2 cups of coffee, 4 slices of lunch meat, and 1 chocolate chip cookie).
With your food diary, you can get a better sense of how much you eat and when you nibble on your food. Are you snacking too often, trying to change your diet too quickly, or skipping important items that should be part of your diet?
The food diary is an important first step. Once you have a better understanding of what you eat, you can work on other areas of your health. Consider developing a moderate exercise plan that corresponds with your food and beverage intake. Be sure to take any vitamin supplements or other medications that have been recommended by your physician or other health professionals you work with in your daily life.
